A delegation from the Immigration and Citizenship Service (ICS) held a discussion with the President of the Sidama Region, H.E. Mr. Desta Ledamo, regarding operational and system-building initiatives related to civil and family registration.
H.E. Selamawit Dawit, Director General of the Immigration and Citizenship Service, emphasized that guiding the civil and family registration system through law and technology is crucial for success. She noted that identifying and verifying the community’s economic status and working in coordination from the lowest administrative levels upward is vital. During the discussion, she highlighted that the ICS will work in partnership with the Sidama Region in these sectors moving forward.
The Director General further explained that modernizing civil and family registration and working in harmony does more than just analyze data; it serves as a key input for national development planning. She stressed that cooperation and joint coordination are essential to realizing “An Ethiopia where everyone is known.”
The President of the Sidama Region, H.E. Mr. Desta Ledamo, remarked that the region is a leader in civil and family registration. He stated that many activities have already been carried out to ensure the success of the work, and noted that this discussion helps in establishing a clear mission to fill data gaps.
The President added that today’s consultation will help replace traditional methods with better dynamic systems for civil and family registration, instill the concept within the community, and create enabling conditions for improved procedures.
H.E. Mr. Bikila Mezgebu, Deputy Director General and Head of the Citizenship Sector, mentioned that facilitating civil and family registration in a language everyone understands—in collaboration with the Ethiopian Artificial Intelligence Institute—provides data that serves as an input for the Digital Ethiopia 2030 strategy.
Mr. Bikila Mezgebu further explained that civil and family registration plays a significant role in highlighting the country’s economic growth and analyzing those engaged in the investment sector. He concluded that this discussion creates a mutual understanding that the region should continue progressing in this manner.
