Addis Ababa, April 12, 2026 (E.C. Miazia 04, 2018) — The first phase of a nationwide study assessing current family registration practices, conducted by Addis Ababa University, has been presented.
The research report was unveiled in the presence of Her Excellency Mrs. Selamawit Dawit, Director General of the Immigration and Citizenship Service (ICS), alongside other senior officials of the institution.
The study outlines the strengths and weaknesses of the current family registration system, which is crucial for ensuring accountability and enabling data-driven institutional planning.
According to the findings, major challenges identified include:
Addressing these findings, Director General Selamawit Dawit directed officials to rectify these gaps moving forward to build a more robust and efficient registration ecosystem. She further noted that as part of ongoing institutional reforms, efforts have been made to legally incorporate family registration into proclamations.
“This study is essential for modernizing our current family registration system and ensuring data accuracy,” the Director General stated, adding that ongoing efforts to digitalize family registration and launch a new system should be integrated into the study’s scope.
Similarly, Deputy Director General of the ICS, His Excellency Mr. Bikila Mezgebu, emphasized that the study needs to comprehensively address the foundational concept of family registration. He urged that the selection of research areas and locations align closely with the overarching objectives of the study.
Mr. Bikila underscored that by identifying root institutional bottlenecks, this study marks a critical milestone toward launching a standardized, formal family registration system.
Following further input gathering and workshops, the finalized first-phase results of the study are expected to be officially released.
